I have not suffered from this in a long time. But I remember a time when I did. I did not know what to do.
Just freezing because I did not know what action to take. To be paralyzed in a state of indecision. Terrified of all the second guessing scenarios I generated in my crowded little head.
But you know what? With the birth of “Just do it” and other such tag lines, I realized that doing nothing was worse than doing anything.
That applies in so many situations. But ultimately, it needs to be stated so many times because humans are afraid.
Why are they afraid? They think way too much.
This has also been stated so many times but it also bears repeating because it just doesn’t sink in. 5 words that say it all:
STOP LIVING IN YOUR HEAD!!
People get so worried about what they could do wrong if they do something, that they don’t do anything at all.
Guess what? Doing nothing is the worst you can do.
“He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg.” ~Chinese Proverb
From The Top
First of all, if you think about it, you have no idea what is around the next bend in your life. Even if you decide what to do next and think that it is a perfect move, Life could be turned up on its head tonight and all your well thought plans go to crap.
There is a reality check for you…
So why sweat it?
This could be for short term as well as long term. You cannot get too enthralled in the future. Relax and enjoy the moment. Don’t resist.
Another reality check? Life goes on whether you are doing constructive with it or not.
So hey! Why don’t you make sure you are working towards that uncertain future by making your life instead of being a victim in it? Make life happen for you instead of happening to you.
Yes, I am speaking that nasty long word procrastination. And it can truly ruin your life.
Time for Some Discovery
You need to ask yourself some serious questions about yourself. Find out what makes you tick. Meditate. Take online tests designed to enlighten you about your interests. That will help answer ‘the what to do if you don’t know what to do’ question. Start a journal and leave your thoughts.
Do You Know Your Jungle?
The more you experience, the more you know. The more you know, the more you are able to make trusting decisions for yourself.
Think of it like this: there is a jungle. the jungle has different paths in it. The more you get out and explore said jungle and learn its paths, the more options you have in case of danger or looking for food.
If you stay in your little jungle hut and make baskets or whatever, you will have no idea what to do if some thing out of ‘your ordinary’ happens and you have to leave your little basket making hut.
I personally cannot just sit around and do nothing. I have to be doing something proactive for my day before I can have that proverbial end-of-the-day beer.
What am I getting at? Just the sense of accomplishment helps me feel like an accomplished person.
In other words, doing something.
So I am used to finding something to do when I have nothing to do. It is ingrained in my brain’s neural pathways. Rarely do I second guess myself because at the end of the day, I know I did something.
It is part of a mindset, really. Knowing I did something and did it to the best of my ability helps me to feel like the best human I can be and most likely better than the human I was the day before.
That again sets up an awesome feedback loop. I love feedback loops.
The Science Of It
When you do something, you are setting up your brain in a positive path to continue to do the more of the same. Not listening to those voices in your head that make you hesitate because of a possible bad decision are trying to help, but to what end?
Forcing yourself to do something and then being aware that what you did didn’t cause any pain? Well, do that a few times. It will help.
Call To Action
So remember this post and words next time you get yourself in a pickle and don’t know what to do. Just evaluate and do something.
How about just always do something? Live in the moment but work toward the future. You will feel tons better about yourself when you do.
Start today and you won’t regret it.
What have you got to lose?
Do me a favor and share and leave some notes for me if you would like to add to the discussion. I will take the time to hear my fellow humans’ words and comment, I promise you.
