As a person who thoroughly enjoys the hobby of learning how my brain works and then the conundrum of how that relates to the rest of life and the rest of the functioning of the Universe and/or God(depending on your religious beliefs), this book was very intriguing to me since I saw its title. I was not disappointed.
Mark Waldman, leading neuroscientist and Andrew Newberg, MD collaborated in creating this fascinating book based on new evidence they acquired from their studies.
This 187 page book (not huge) relates a unique and meaningful look at modern science and provides a guide for one to enhance both their mental and physical health and avoid the inevitable mental decline.
Some of the points the book brings about:
- focused prayer and/or meditation permanently changes many functions and structures in your brain changing the way you see life(perceive reality) and changing your values
- Pondering and studying a loving God vs. a disciplinary God increases compassion, love and security over stress and anxiety.
- Prayer and spiritual processes help reduce stress but can slow down the aging process.
- Extreme beliefs which generate anger and prejudice can permanently damage your brain.
I will admit I am personally not a religious person, but I am spiritual. I was surprised to find that the two doctors found that ones who meditated on just positive imagery as opposed to praying obtained similar neurological benefits. Just any positive spiritual belief will benefit the brain.
In addition, the two doctors relay 8 of the best methods to ‘exercise’ your brain. Also, helping in making you aware of western and eastern practices of spirituality that will improve your personal empathy and awareness.
This book is a must read for anyone trying to optimize their lives from many different angles.
